On 12 May 2025, the final trilogue on the Regulation on European statistics on population and housing (ESOP) concluded with a provisional agreement between the co-legislators.
The compromise addresses key concerns of Member States, including: limiting mandatory estimations to national-level total population data for three specific topics identified in the Annex, timing of data transmission as closely as possible adjusted to the capabilities of national statistical systems and taking into account transition periods, a derogation model in line with the Council's mandate, as well as compromise solutions on safeguard clauses and pilot studies.
On 28 May, the Committee of the Permanent Representatives of the Governments of the Member States to the European Union (COREPER I) confirmed the provisional agreement between the co-legislators, thus enabling further legislative work towards the adoption of the regulation.
